I can’t possibly imagine thinking this way about dog clothing but “some” people in the world today think that it is silly for dog owners to dress their pets in cutsie little sweaters. We’ve all heard the jokes from the “non believers” about the eccentric dog owners who “baby” their pets and dress them in expensive designer dog clothing.
There can be absolutely no doubt that it’s incredibly fun to pick out cute dog clothing to adorn your little dog in. If you’re like me, you have several cute little outfits sitting in the dogie drawer anxiously awaiting a perfect occasion to be worn by your baby doll.
Many of these “naysayers” simply don’t understand that there are often good reasons for adorning our pets in dog clothing. Some dogs like Siberian Huskies, Labrador Retrievers, and Saint Bernards, to name just a few were bred for cold climates and come equipped with thick double layer coats to keep them toasty warm in cold weather. Unfortunately many people mistakenly believe that all dogs are equally equipped for chilly days. Nothing could be further from the truth.
My little Chihuahua, Petey Gonzales will shake and shiver even during slightly chilly days during the summer. He really appreciates a light sweater to just keep the chill off. Many dogs will be downright miserable during cold winter months if they aren’t wearing a sweater.
Some will say, “Okay, so your dog gets cold but he lives indoors. Why could he possibly need to wear a sweater?” The answer is very simple. These dogs still need daily walks and potty breaks. Dog clothing will keep them warm on those chilly days. You might not believe it but it was 38 degrees at my house last night and it’s the middle of July!
Some people don’t realize that dogs, like people, can catch a cold and get the sniffles. So the next time someone gives you a hard time about the sweater that your dog is wearing, ask them why they are wearing that warm goose down stuffed winter coat?
