Dog Clothing is not just for small dogs.  I don’t know why people would think that their large breed dogs don’t get cold.  I had a German Shorthaired Pointer that absolutely hated the cold.  Her natural fur coat was so short and there wasn’t an ounce of fat on her.  She simply wasn’t bred for the cold and was most comfortable when we let her wear a sweater on those long, cold, winter days.

There are other reasons why your large dog might need doggie clothing.  Many large breeds are hunting dogs.  These dogs are generally well trained and bred for the job at hand but that certainly doesn’t make them bullet proof.  Fortunately, you can buy bright orange hunting vests for your canine hunting partner.

No, bullets don’t bounce off of them but you will be much less likely to shoot your faithful companion if you can see him clearly in the brush. Many of these hunting vests are actually made of thorn resistant materials.  Some game birds will hide deep in the thorny thickets to avoid their pursuers.  An energetic hunting dog can really get cut up while attempting to flush their quarry.

We’ve talked about some of the practical reasons for dog clothing for large breeds.  Now let’s talk about some of the fun reasons. There are actually quite a few practical reasons but there are just as many ways to have fun dressing your family dog.

People are used to seeing a pug dressed up like a fireman or a poodle wearing a ballerina costume but not many people see large breeds sporting a clever Halloween costume. You don’t have to own a 2 pound dog to join in on the fun of dressing your dog up for a party or parade.  Many large dogs are very easy going and adjust quite quickly to wearing a costume.

I’ve mentioned it before but I’ll say it again. My daughter loves dressing our big English Mastiff in various costumes and I think she gets more attention when she wears them than our little dogs do!

So in closing, I’d like to remind you not to forget your large dog the next time you find yourself shopping for dog clothing. They might not be able to say it but they’ll appreciate you for helping them stay warm when it’s extra chilly outside.
